This Spaghetti Pie is an oven-baked casserole that takes a classic Italian recipe and turns it into an easy one-dish meal. Layers of spaghetti noodles, beef, sauce, cream cheese, and sour cream bring a blend of comfort food flavors. A perfect dish for a family meal!
I love casserole recipes. They bring all the components of your meal together into a casserole that spells easy. This Spaghetti Pie is great with Cheesy Italian Bread for a complete meal. It is great for reheating making it an excellent recipe for a potluck.
Grumpy’s Comfort Food: Pasta, Cheese, and Beef.
When Grumpy and I first were together, this was one of the first recipes I made for him and he fell in love with it. It is very close to lasagna with flavor and texture and lasagna is his favorite meal of all time. With the onset of our having to restrict carbs, this became a once in a while special meal to enjoy.
What I love most about this Spaghetti Pie recipe is it is super easy to make. Originally it was covered with a seasoned tomato sauce that I would use, but as time progressed, I started making my own homemade spaghetti sauce that I would use in place of it.
Why is this called Spaghetti Pie?
While Spaghetti Pie isn’t necessarily pie per se, it is called Spaghetti Pie because the pasta noodles form the “crust” of the pie. Then it is topped with the cheese mixture, meat sauce, and cheese before baking.
What you need to make Spaghetti Pie

Spaghetti Noodles: Choose a pasta noodle that is toothsome. I don’t recommend angel hair pasta. It is far to thin.
Sour Cream and Cream Cheese: I also opt for full-fat versions and buy a good quality product.
Cheese: Buy the brick cheese and shred it yourself. Cheddar Cheese gives great flavor here, but if your inclined to want to use soft cheese, then Mozzarella works great also.
Homemade Pasta Sauce: For the best flavor, a homemade pasta sauce is the best hands down.
Casserole Dish: You want a medium-sized casserole dish for this recipe. It can be round, square, or oblong. I love the baking dish I used in the photos, however, they aren’t available anymore. But, these casserole dishes are on my wish list!
Things you should know about making this recipe
Undercook the pasta by 2 minutes. If you cook it until it is al dente, it will continue to cook while in the oven causing the spaghetti noodles to overcook.
Be sure the pasta is well-drained. Watery pasta is not a good thing.
Spray the baking dish with cooking spray. Some people may say ceramic doesn’t need a non-stick spray, but personally, I always use it to stay on the safe side.
A thick pasta sauce is best to use. If you don’t make your own, then be sure to buy one that says thick on the label and one that doesn’t look like it is watery.
Substitutions I have made to this recipe
Since I have been making this Spaghetti Pie casserole for many years now, I have tried it in a variety of ways. Maybe one of these ways will fit your likes.
Skip the sour cream and cream cheese and use 1- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese. Whisk an egg into the cheese mixture along with a teaspoon of Italian seasoning and 1/4 cup parmesan cheese.
Substitute sweet or hot Italian sausage crumbles for the ground beef. This also will work well with ground turkey.
Whisk one egg and 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese together. Stir it into the cooked spaghetti noodles. Then place the spaghetti mixture into the casserole and proceed with step 5.
What do you serve with Spaghetti Pie
A great big fresh tossed salad is always a welcome side to any pasta meal. If salad isn’t your thing, then you may like to roast some zucchini or serve some roasted asparagus for a veggie side dish.
